The Sunshine Coast Health Centre Scholarship

Opportunity Detail

As a leader in addiction treatment, Sunshine Coast Health Centre is proud to announce a new scholarship opportunity to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students in clinical counselling, psychology, social sciences, medical, and nursing programs who are interested in working in addictions and mental health in Canada. Addiction – Addiction is a condition that results when a person uses a substance (e.g. alcohol, cocaine, nicotine) or engages in an activity (e.g. gambling, sex, shopping) as part of a continued use/act that becomes compulsive and interferes with life activities such as work, relationships, or health. Users may not be aware that their behaviour is out of control and causing problems for themselves and others. Addiction is commonly defined by the biological state in which the body adapts to the presence of a drug so that it no longer has the same effect (also known as tolerance). At Sunshine Coast Health Centre, we relate addiction to the fundamental motivation in humans including the need to make sense of his or her life and pursue a personally meaningful existence. Through a Meaning Therapy lens, we see addiction as a result of an individual’s persistently frustrated attempts to live a personally meaningful life. Clients in our drug rehab and alcohol treatment programs illustrate what life is like when an individual lacks personal meaning. In spite of having the outward appearance of success such as families, social circles, good jobs, and material possessions, our clients describe their inner world as one beset by boredom, anger, depression, loneliness, and a nagging feeling of emptiness like lost souls wandering without a direction. Our clients also report feeling as if they’re different and do not fit in the world. This sense of separateness and brokenness lies at the heart of why individuals turns to drugs, alcohol or other forms of addiction.

To apply for this scholarship, please submit a 500-1000 word essay describing your interest in addictions and how it relates to your studies and future career. You can also choose to write your essay in response to one or more of the following questions: 1.How has our (society’s) understanding of addiction evolved in Canada and why is that important? 2.How do new understandings/approaches/theories of addiction impact prevention, treatment, and education? 3.In what ways do traditional forms of addiction treatment need to improve? 4.What is your perspective on personal meaning and how it relates to addiction?
