Bug Bites (BuBi)

Bug Bites aims to be the first entomophagy-inspired organization at U of T. The organization’s purpose is to initiate a movement that promotes food consciousness and sustainable consumption, on campus and beyond. Entomophagy refers to the consumption of insects, and has been championed by the UN as a more efficient and sustainable means of food production. Insects are also an excellent alternative protein source and a dietary staple for billions of people worldwide. We are a passionate group of students that have come to believe that entomophagy has a role to play in the future of food production, and we wish to share our passion on campus.

We acknowledge that many Canadians have reservations about eating insects. However, we cite the popularization of sushi in the 1970s as evidence that food culture can change and expand. Ingredients such as raw fish and seaweed were initially taboo in North America, but sushi has nevertheless become a popular food in Toronto. Our hope is that we can help unravel the taboos surrounding insect consumption as well.

As a school with a culturally diverse student body, U of T is ideally situated for initializing an entomophagy movement. In addition, U of T would one of the first schools in North America to support entomophagy as a sustainable dietary practice. The entomophagy movement is already underway in North America as insect food, insect farms, and culinary innovators gain popularity. As students, we saw the need to explore and take part in this growing movement.

Bug Bites will focus primarily on cooking and food sustainability. It will seek to overcome taboos, create demand for sustainable foods, and show people that insect consumption is tenable, healthy, and fun. We will host cooking workshop events for students and food enthusiasts to teach people how to incorporate insects into their diets. Ultimately, we hope promoting entomophagy will encourage people to consider more sustainable alternatives to meat and dairy.

The importance entomophagy is that it widens peoples’ perspectives, encouraging people to examine the sustainability of their eating habits and the cultural and nutritional choices they make each day. A U of T entomophagy movement could lay the foundation for greater consciousness about food consumption and production in students and their communities.
