Art Re:public

Our organization wants to bring art to the streets of St. George campus. We believe that public art that is free, accessible, and unexpected will enrich any St. George student, staff, faculty, or pedestrian, and their day. Considering University of Toronto’s large commuter demographic, we want to disrupt prevalent feelings of alienation and isolation from our university’s vibrant student body and foster a shared experience. We believe a spectacle such as public art breaks through the silence of social anxiety felt by many and transcends different demographics.
More than just a conversation-starter, our public art pieces/temporary installation works will also relate to issues that club members consider to be topical to our campus, city, and or country as a whole. This will be accomplished through weekly meetings with a vote held at the beginning of the month to decide on a project, with a new installation set up ideally every 2 months. Weekly meetings will be 1-2 hours long and used to: provide members with greater experience and skills in art making; execute the planned installation; discuss the issues relevant to the artwork; share about members’ notable and relevant campus experiences. These meetings in short will work towards creating community between both group members and strangers who happen to find themselves in the St. George area.
